Webcash (WEB) is a peer-to-peer (P2P) bearer cryptocurrency designed for payments, emphasizing simplicity and Proof-of-Work mining. A notable characteristic of Webcash is its architecture, which diverges from traditional cryptocurrencies by not utilizing a blockchain. Instead, Webcash wallets interact with a central Webcash server to verify transactions and prevent double-spending. This design facilitates fast and fee-less payments. Payments with Webcash are decentralized, P2P, and instant, often conducted by users directly copying and pasting their Webcash to a recipient through various communication channels like email or chat. The system does not require user registration, logins, or conventional cryptocurrency addresses. The central server's primary function is to assist wallets in detecting double-spending and maintaining the integrity of the monetary supply, rather than acting as an intermediary for value transfer between users. Webcash can be mined using a computer's central processing unit (CPU), allowing anyone to participate in the mining process. Mining serves as a method to obtain Webcash but is not used for network consensus, which helps in easily adjusting the mining algorithm if necessary and mitigating risks like 51% attacks. Webcash was launched in January 2022 and builds upon the "e-cash" concept, first introduced in the 1980s. A community has emerged around Webcash, developing tools such as the WebCasa wallet to enhance user experience. The project's monetary policy is founded on scarcity, with a planned total supply of 210 billion Webcash, and a portion of newly mined Webcash is allocated to the Webcash server.
