Mars Protocol is a decentralized credit platform within a major cross-chain ecosystem. It utilizes a unique architecture called Credit Accounts, or Rovers, which act as specialized sub-wallets. This design allows users to cross-margin their collateral across various activities—including lending, borrowing, and yield farming—within a single interface. By consolidating these positions, the protocol enhances capital efficiency and provides a more integrated experience compared to traditional isolated lending markets.

The protocol operates through two main components. The Red Bank serves as the core money market where users deposit assets to earn yield or provide collateral to borrow other tokens. The Fields of Mars represents the leveraged yield farming branch, allowing users to borrow assets to amplify their positions in liquidity pools on supported decentralized exchanges. This dual structure enables both passive lending and active, leveraged strategies across the host network and its supported hubs.

The protocol recently transitioned its core infrastructure to a new primary network. Token holders were required to swap original tokens for a new version at a 1:1 ratio using a dedicated transmuter pool on supported decentralized platforms. To ensure long-term sustainability, the protocol moved to a "Buy and Burn" model. Under this system, protocol revenue is used to purchase tokens from the market and permanently remove them from circulation, creating a deflationary supply dynamic intended to accrue value to the token itself.

Staking is conducted through the protocol's official governance portal on its host network. By staking tokens, users gain voting power in the "Martian Council" to influence project direction. While stakers no longer receive passive emissions due to the burn model, they can participate in the Mars Fragments campaign. This program allows participants to earn on-chain points by providing liquidity in eligible markets. These Fragments represent a share of a dedicated rewards pool and are claimable as tokens, incentivizing deep liquidity within the ecosystem.

Mars Protocol utilizes a "Health Factor" to monitor position safety; if this drops below 1.0 due to asset volatility, the position becomes eligible for liquidation. To protect users, the protocol employs "gradual liquidation," where liquidators only repay enough debt to restore the Health Factor rather than closing the entire position. In the event of market exploits or liquidity crunches, the protocol utilizes a dedicated Safety Fund and governance-led settlement processes to reimburse affected lenders and maintain system stability.

Governance is decentralized and managed by token stakers who vote on proposals following a discussion period on community forums. To ensure agility, a specialized Risk Management DAO is authorized by the community to quickly adjust technical parameters, such as borrow caps and loan-to-value ratios, without a full multi-day vote. This allows the protocol to react rapidly to market shifts or technical emergencies, balancing democratic oversight with the operational efficiency needed for a complex credit platform.
