IRISnet, also known as IRIS Hub, is a service infrastructure and protocol built using Cosmos SDK and Tendermint. It aims to facilitate the construction of next-generation distributed business applications by enabling interoperability and providing a foundation for various DeFi applications. Launched in March 2019, it's designed to bring the power of decentralized, open networks to small and medium businesses and freelance service providers.
The IRIS token is the native utility and governance token of the IRISnet blockchain. It serves multiple purposes: Holders can stake IRIS tokens to secure the network through a Bonded Proof-of-Stake (BPoS) consensus mechanism and earn rewards. IRIS tokens are used to pay for all transaction fees on the network and for smart contract executions. Service providers within the IRIS network charge fees denominated in IRIS tokens. Lastly, token holders have voting power to participate in the network's governance, allowing them to create and vote on proposals for future amendments and direction.
IRISnet is built with the Cosmos SDK and utilizes the Tendermint consensus engine. It employs a Bonded Proof-of-Stake (BPoS) consensus mechanism. The network also incorporates the Cosmos Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol, enabling cross-chain interoperability for token transfers and interactions between different blockchains. Additionally, IRISnet is EVM-integrated, allowing developers to deploy EVM-based smart contracts and decentralized applications.
IRISnet was developed by Bianjie Intelligent Technology Ltd. (Bianjie AI), a Shanghai-based company co-founded by Harriet Cao and Haifeng Xi in 2016. The Tendermint team, responsible for the Tendermint consensus engine and Cosmos, is also an integral part of the project's development, contributing significantly to its underlying technology.
IRISnet supports distributed business applications by integrating off-chain data and services with on-chain transactions. Its service infrastructure can be used for distributed data, AI, e-commerce, and combining consortium chains with public chains. It offers solutions for privacy-preserving healthcare data exchange, inter-chain marketplaces, and digital asset exchange for supply chain finance. The project also provides an enterprise permissioned blockchain product known as IRITA.
IRISnet improves scalability and efficiency through its use of blockchain technology and the Tendermint protocol. It achieves interoperability through the Cosmos IBC protocol, which allows for the transfer of values and cross-chain computation between different blockchains. The platform is designed to connect to the main Cosmos Hub as a regional hub, enhancing its ability to interact within the broader Cosmos ecosystem.
