Electronic Gulden, commonly referred to as e-Gulden with the ticker EFL, is a decentralized cryptocurrency project that launched in March 2014. It was originally started by a group of students in the Netherlands who wanted to create a digital alternative to the Euro and Bitcoin specifically for the Dutch community. The project is currently overseen by the Electronic Gulden Foundation, which focuses on community building and merchant adoption within the Netherlands. Technically, Electronic Gulden is a fork of the Litecoin blockchain. It operates on its own independent blockchain and uses a Proof of Work consensus mechanism based on the Scrypt hashing algorithm. A unique technical feature of the project is the Oeruschield security extension. This was designed by the core developers to protect the network against potential 51 percent attacks by implementing a system known as identified mining. Under this system, a portion of the network blocks must be mined by certified mining pools. These pools are required to be operated by companies officially registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce, ensuring that a significant part of the network security is tied to identifiable local entities. The primary goal of the project is to serve as a reliable tool for payments and savings for the Dutch population. The foundation aims to educate the public on the benefits of digital currency and encourages local businesses to integrate the token into their payment systems. Unlike many other early digital assets, the project included a fifty percent pre-mine at its launch, intended to support the long-term development and distribution of the coin within its target market. The project remains focused on regional utility and decentralized governance through its foundation. It positions itself as an accessible entry point for users in the Netherlands, providing a localized ecosystem that emphasizes security and national identity within the broader Web3 space.
