Wrapped eETH, commonly known as weETH, is a key component of the ether.fi ecosystem. It is a liquid restaking token that functions as a wrapped, non-rebasing version of eETH. To understand weETH, it is helpful to look at how it originates within the ether.fi protocol. The ether.fi protocol is a decentralized and non-custodial staking platform on the Ethereum blockchain. When users stake their Ethereum through the protocol, they receive eETH in return. This eETH token is a liquid staking asset that automatically restakes the underlying Ethereum into EigenLayer, allowing users to earn multiple types of rewards, including native staking rewards and restaking incentives. While eETH is a rebasing token, meaning its balance in a user's wallet increases automatically as rewards are earned, this can create technical challenges for many decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms. To solve this, ether.fi introduced weETH. By wrapping eETH into weETH, the token balance remains static. Instead of the quantity of tokens increasing, the value of each weETH token grows relative to the underlying eETH. Technical Utility and Ecosystem: weETH is designed for high interoperability across the Web3 space. It is built using the ERC-20 standard and utilizes the LayerZero Omnichain Fungible Token (OFT) standard. This allows weETH to be transferred and used across multiple Layer 2 networks, such as Blast, Mode, and others, facilitating native restaking outside of the Ethereum mainnet. The utility of weETH extends to various partner protocols including Balancer, Pendle, Aura, and Maverick. Users can provide weETH as liquidity, use it as collateral for borrowing, or engage in sophisticated yield strategies without losing their exposure to Ethereum staking rewards. A defining feature of the project is its commitment to decentralization. Unlike some other liquid staking providers, ether.fi allows stakers to maintain control over their administrative keys, reducing counterparty risk.
