Vertex Protocol is a decentralized exchange (DEX) built on the Arbitrum network that utilizes a hybrid architecture. It integrates spot trading, perpetual futures, and a money market into a single platform. By using an off-chain sequencer for order matching and on-chain settlement, it achieves execution speeds of 10–30 milliseconds. This provides a user experience similar to centralized exchanges while ensuring that users maintain full self-custody of their funds through their own digital wallets.

Unlike traditional Automated Market Makers (AMMs) that rely solely on liquidity pools, Vertex uses a hybrid model combining a limit orderbook with an AMM. Furthermore, while some platforms focus exclusively on perpetuals, Vertex is "vertically integrated," meaning it combines spot trading, perpetuals, and integrated lending/borrowing into one "universal margin" account. This allows users to use their entire portfolio balance as collateral across different types of trades, improving capital efficiency.

VRTX is the native utility token used for staking, governance, and trading incentives. Users who stake VRTX participate in the protocol's growth and earn a share of trading fees. The staking system includes voVRTX, a non-transferable voting score that increases the longer you stake, and xVRTX, a liquid staked version for governance. Under the latest upgrades, rewards are auto-compounding, with the protocol using a significant portion of trading fees to buy back VRTX from the market to redistribute to stakers.

Trading on the Vertex sequencer is gas-free, meaning you do not pay network fees for every individual trade execution. However, because it is a decentralized protocol, users still need a small amount of ETH in their wallets to cover "on-chain" transactions such as initial deposits, withdrawals, or staking actions. To simplify the experience, Vertex offers "One-Click Trading" (1CT), which allows users to sign a single session approval so they don't have to manually approve every transaction in their Web3 wallet.

Vertex Edge is the protocol's synchronous liquidity layer that allows Vertex to operate across multiple chains like Arbitrum, Base, Blast, Mantle, and Sei while sharing a single, unified liquidity pool. This means a trader on one chain can trade against liquidity from another chain without needing to manually bridge their assets first. This architecture solves the problem of liquidity fragmentation in the DeFi ecosystem, providing deep orderbooks and consistent pricing across all supported networks.
