The project aims to treat the root cause of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s by improving translational fidelity. This involves increasing the accuracy of how proteins are produced in the brain. While many current treatments try to clear existing protein aggregates, Transfidelity focuses on preventing these clumps from forming by ensuring high-quality protein synthesis from the start.

The research is led by Dr. Dimitri Scherbakov from the University of Zurich and Dr. Rashid Akbergenov from the University of Basel. These lead scientists possess over 50 years of combined experience in ribosome research and protein translation, providing a robust academic and scientific foundation for the project’s objectives.

Most mainstream medical research follows the Amyloid Hypothesis, which centers on clearing existing plaques. In contrast, Transfidelity employs a unique strategy that targets the ribosome's quality control. By ensuring proteins are constructed correctly at the cellular level, the project seeks to address the biological process at its origin rather than simply treating existing damage.

FIDEL is an IP-Token (IPT) that grants holders governance rights over the project’s development. Users can participate in the ecosystem to influence research milestones, funding allocations, and potential commercialization steps. It serves as a community-driven mechanism for participating in the governance of intellectual property generated by the research.

Transfidelity is a spinout project that was funded and incubated by Cerebrum DAO. Cerebrum DAO is a specialized organization within the decentralized science space focused on brain health and longevity. It provides the framework for the project’s community governance and helps facilitate the milestone-based progress of the medical research.

In the Decentralized Science (DeSci) space, an IP-Token is a way to fractionalize the governance and interest in a scientific patent or research project. This allows a global community to fund and influence research development, a role that was traditionally reserved for large pharmaceutical corporations or specialized venture capital firms.
