Ternio is a blockchain and financial technology company founded in 2018 by Ian Kane and Daniel Gouldman. Based in the United States, the project aimed to bridge the gap between traditional financial systems and the digital asset economy. Its primary mission was to accelerate the real-world adoption of blockchain technology by providing scalable infrastructure for enterprise use and everyday consumer payments. The project developed a proprietary, high-speed blockchain framework known as Lexicon. This technology was designed to address scalability issues in existing networks, with a stated capacity to handle over one million transactions per second. Lexicon was marketed toward industries requiring high transaction volumes, such as digital advertising, government, and fintech. By providing a transparent and verifiable ledger, the system allowed businesses to track supply chains or verify advertising spend through various intermediaries. In addition to its enterprise focus, the project launched a consumer-facing product called BlockCard. This was a cryptocurrency debit card that integrated with the Stellar network to facilitate real-time spending. It allowed cardholders to use digital assets for purchases at physical and online retailers wherever major card networks were accepted. The native utility token, TERN, functioned as a payment and rewards mechanism within this ecosystem, facilitating transactions and offering various benefits to users of the platform. In May 2021, Ternio underwent a major rebranding and merged its various products under a new name, Unbanked. This move was intended to create a cohesive identity for its crypto-friendly banking services, including global bank accounts and debit cards. During this period, the project achieved notable milestones, such as becoming a cryptocurrency enablement partner for the Visa Fast Track program and collaborating with Mastercard to expand its reach. Despite its initial growth and high-profile partnerships, the project faced significant challenges. In May 2023, the leadership announced that Unbanked would wind down its operations. The founders cited a combination of a harsh regulatory environment in the United States and the failure of a planned investment round to materialize as the primary reasons for the closure. Following this announcement, the company urged its customers to withdraw their funds as it began the process of shuttering its services. While the platform is no longer operational in its original capacity, the project remains a significant example of early efforts to integrate blockchain technology into the mainstream banking and payment industry.
