Spacemesh is a decentralized layer one blockchain platform designed to be a more equitable and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional networks. This process is called smeshing. By combining proof of space with a proof of elapsed time, the network ensures that participants are actually storing data over a specific duration, making the system resistant to many types of attacks while remaining energy efficient. A key architectural difference is that Spacemesh uses a directed acyclic graph, or mesh, rather than a single linear chain of blocks. This allows multiple blocks to be produced and validated simultaneously, which improves scalability and ensures that rewards are distributed more fairly. In this collaborative system, smeshers do not compete in a winner take all race. Instead, rewards are distributed every two weeks to all honest participants based on the amount of storage they have committed. This approach minimizes the incentive for the formation of large mining pools and helps keep the network decentralized. The native token for the project is SMH. It serves several essential functions within the ecosystem, including paying for transaction fees and facilitating the execution of smart contracts. It is also used as an incentive for smeshers who contribute their storage and compute resources to maintain the network. Additionally, the token plays a role in the governance of the platform, allowing the community to have a voice in the future direction and technical upgrades of the protocol.
