RIPE serves as the native utility and governance token for the Ripe Protocol. Its core function is decentralized governance, enabling holders to lock their tokens in a Governance Vault to acquire voting power. This allows the community to decide on protocol parameters, including reward distributions, treasury management, and accepted collateral types. RIPE is also utilized as an incentive for active participants, such as borrowers, stakers, and liquidity providers, to encourage ecosystem growth.

The Ripe Protocol stands out through its "Unified Portfolio" approach. Unlike traditional lending protocols that often require separate vaults and debt positions for each asset type, Ripe allows users to consolidate various assets—including tokenized real-world assets, NFTs, and yield-bearing tokens—into a single loan position. This innovation significantly enhances capital efficiency and simplifies risk management by allowing a diverse range of collateral to support one unified debt position.

GREEN is the native stablecoin of the Ripe Protocol, which users borrow against their collateral. To ensure its stability and peg, the protocol employs several mechanisms, including a Stability Pool and a Peg Stability Module (PSM). The Stability Pool is designed to absorb risky debt from liquidated positions, while the PSM helps maintain the value of GREEN. This multi-layered approach ensures the stablecoin remains a reliable asset within the decentralized finance ecosystem.

RIPE has a capped total supply of 1 billion tokens, following a "Community First" distribution strategy. The allocation includes 25% for community incentives (the only portion unlocking at the Token Generation Event), 22.2% for the Ripe Foundation Treasury, 20.6% for core contributors (subject to a one-year lock and four-year vesting), 17.2% for early backers, and 15% for distribution partners. A portion of protocol revenue is typically used to buy back RIPE, providing a yield mechanism for stakers.

Users can earn RIPE rewards by staking tokens, providing liquidity, maintaining active borrowing positions, or depositing GREEN into the Stability Pool. Additionally, the protocol offers "Ripe Bonds," which allow users to purchase RIPE at a discount in exchange for providing capital or liquidity. These bonds often involve a vesting period, serving as an advanced feature to deepen protocol liquidity while rewarding long-term participants.

RIPE is primarily deployed on the Base Layer 2 network. To participate in governance, users must access the official decentralized application and "lock" their RIPE tokens for a chosen duration, ranging from one week to four years. In return, they receive voting-escrowed RIPE (veRIPE), which determines their voting weight on critical protocol proposals. Security is maintained through immutable contracts and regular reviews by leading blockchain security firms to ensure the safety of user deposits.
