stkBNB is a liquid staking solution offered by pSTAKE. It allows users to stake their Binance Coin (BNB) and receive a liquid, representative token called stkBNB. This innovation enables users to earn staking rewards while simultaneously maintaining liquidity for their assets, offering flexibility within the broader Web3 ecosystem.
When BNB is staked through pSTAKE, users instantly receive stkBNB. The underlying value of stkBNB continuously increases relative to BNB as it accrues and auto-compounds staking rewards in the background. This process is inspired by Compound's cToken model, where an evolving exchange rate (c-value) reflects the accumulated rewards, making stkBNB a yield-bearing and liquid asset.
Key advantages include gaining instant liquidity for your staked BNB, allowing you to use stkBNB in various decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols on the BNB Chain to earn additional yield opportunities beyond just staking rewards. It bypasses the typical 7-day unbonding period associated with direct BNB unstaking if you choose to swap your stkBNB on a decentralized exchange. Furthermore, pSTAKE allows staking of any non-zero amount of BNB, removing minimum staking barriers.
Users have two primary options. First, you can initiate a direct unstake transaction on the pSTAKE application. Your stkBNB will be burned, and a request for an equivalent amount of BNB (based on the ongoing exchange rate) will be created. You can then claim your BNB after a 15-day unbonding period. Alternatively, for faster access, you can swap your stkBNB for BNB directly on decentralized exchanges like PancakeSwap.
While stkBNB offers advantages, it carries several risks. These include market volatility of BNB itself, smart contract risks from potential vulnerabilities or exploits in the pSTAKE protocol, and theoretical slashing risk if delegated validators misbehave. Additionally, liquidity risk exists, where extreme market conditions or issues with decentralized exchange liquidity pools could impact the ease and price of swapping stkBNB back to BNB. There's also a general protocol attack risk.
stkBNB provides instant liquidity because, upon staking BNB, users receive the liquid stkBNB token immediately. This allows users to deploy their staked asset value in other decentralized finance (DeFi) applications on the BNB Chain or trade it on decentralized exchanges without waiting for typical unbonding periods. This flexibility ensures users can engage with the broader DeFi ecosystem while still earning staking rewards.
