In May 2021, the protocol experienced a significant flash loan attack. An exploiter manipulated a liquidity pair on a major blockchain network to mint millions of BUNNY tokens, which were then liquidated on decentralized exchanges. This exploit caused a massive collapse in the token's utility and value, leading to a significant loss of trust from the community and investors.
While the sudden collapse led many to suspect a rug pull, the original development team remained active initially to implement a recovery plan. However, a subsequent exploit on their sidechain expansion further damaged the protocol's reputation. Eventually, the founding team disbanded and transitioned the project to a community-led Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) in February 2022, moving away from a centralized management structure.
Most community members and advisors consider the original protocol to be legacy or defunct. While the smart contracts may still exist on the blockchain, the original development team is no longer actively managing or maintaining the platform in its original capacity. The Zap feature was designed to simplify the user experience for yield farmers. It allowed users to convert a single asset into a Liquidity Pool (LP) token in one click. By automating multiple steps—such as swapping assets and pairing them for liquidity—the function saved time and reduced the technical complexity of interacting with decentralized finance protocols.
Newer iterations of the project on alternative networks have explored a vote-escrowed model known as veBUNNY. In this system, users lock their tokens to gain voting power and potentially higher rewards, similar to popular governance models in DeFi. Additionally, the brand has explored shifting toward a decentralized stablecoin protocol where the native token acts as governance or collateral.
