Nomad Bridged WETH, often called madWETH, is a wrapped version of Ethereum that was transferred from the Ethereum mainnet to the Moonbeam network via the Nomad Bridge. Under standard conditions, these tokens are meant to be backed 1:1 by real ETH held in smart contracts. However, following a major security breach, the backing of these tokens was significantly compromised.
In August 2022, a routine smart contract upgrade inadvertently created a flaw that allowed users to withdraw funds without proper verification. This led to a decentralized exploit where numerous individuals were able to drain assets from the bridge's reserves. This event resulted in the bridge losing the majority of its collateral, affecting all bridged assets on Moonbeam.
The token is categorized as a distressed asset because it is no longer fully backed by Ethereum. Since the bridge reserves were depleted, the token does not maintain its intended value. Its current worth is primarily derived from the potential recovery of funds through legal actions or returns from those involved in the exploit. It is generally characterized by very low liquidity.
Nomad established a recovery procedure that requires users to pass identity verification (KYC) through a designated partner platform.
