Midnight is a fourth-generation blockchain project, led by Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson, focused on data protection and privacy. It operates as a privacy-centric sidechain designed to enable decentralized applications (dApps) that prioritize user data security while adhering to regulatory standards. Its main goal is to provide "rational privacy," allowing for the verification of information without directly exposing sensitive underlying data. This enables a new paradigm for privacy-preserving dApps in the decentralized space.

Midnight achieves privacy primarily through the utilization of zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) technology and zero-knowledge (ZK) smart contracts. These advanced cryptographic techniques enable programmable privacy features and secure, private data sharing on the network. A key feature is "selective disclosure," which allows Midnight to prove facts about specific data without revealing the data itself. This ensures that sensitive information remains confidential while still permitting necessary verification and interaction within decentralized applications.

NIGHT is Midnight's unshielded, native, and governance token, serving as a capital asset. It is public, transparent, and primarily used for network security, governance decisions, and generating DUST. DUST, conversely, is a shielded, non-transferable resource. It is automatically generated by holding NIGHT tokens and is exclusively used to pay for transaction fees and execute smart contracts on the Midnight network. This unique "token-generates-resource" model ensures predictable operational costs and a sustainable economic framework.

The Glacier Drop and Scavenger Mine were the two primary phases for Midnight's initial token distribution, representing a significant event in blockchain history. The Glacier Drop was designed to reward existing participants across the broader crypto ecosystem by airdropping NIGHT tokens to those holding qualifying assets in self-custody wallets. The Scavenger Mine offered an alternative method, allowing users to earn tokens by successfully completing specific computational tasks, broadening the reach of the initial distribution.

To claim NIGHT tokens, eligible users were required to visit the official Midnight portals (midnight.network or midnight.gd). They needed to securely connect the self-custody wallet that held their qualifying funds at the snapshot date. Following successful verification, users would then provide a new, unused Cardano wallet address. The claimed tokens were subject to a 360-day "thawing period" starting December 10, 2025, gradually unlocking in four equal 25% installments every 90 days for redemption.

Users must exercise extreme caution to avoid scams during the claiming process. It's paramount to never pay any fees to claim tokens, as the legitimate process is always free. Crucially, users should never, under any circumstances, share their seed phrase or recovery keys with anyone or any platform. Always verify that you are on the official Midnight websites (midnight.network or midnight.gd) when claiming. Be highly suspicious of phishing websites, unsolicited direct messages, or scam tokens designed to lure you to malicious sites.
