Lunarbits is tied to a physical time capsule that was launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and successfully landed on the lunar South Pole on February 22, 2024. This was part of the Lunaprise Mission curated by Space Blue. The digital tokens on Earth are "twins" of the physical artifacts stored on the moon. While the mission used a SpaceX rocket, the project is a private commercial venture and is not managed or endorsed by NASA or SpaceX.

Lunarbits employs a multichain strategy to maximize utility. The Bitcoin Runes version ($LUNARBITS) is the original protocol-based asset, representing a permanent, space-based digital artifact. The Solana version ($LBITS) was introduced to provide the community with higher liquidity and significantly lower transaction fees for daily engagement and rewards. This allows users to choose between the long-term security of Bitcoin and the high-speed efficiency of the Solana network.

The project has an authorized total supply of 222 million tokens. This specific number was chosen to commemorate the moon landing date of February 22 (2/22). A key feature of its tokenomics is the "twin" concept, where every reward token circulating on Earth is linked to the analog space occupied by physical artifacts within the lunar time capsule. This creates a narrative of scarcity based on actual physical presence in space.

Lunarbits functions as the reward token for the Space Blue ecosystem, which manages a digital and physical museum on the moon featuring music and art from world-renowned artists. Holders are expected to receive exclusive benefits, including airdrops, access to unique digital collectibles, and voting rights within a Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO).
