Lombard is a Bitcoin infrastructure protocol designed to activate Bitcoin's role in decentralized finance. It facilitates liquid staking, cross-chain integration, and yield strategies. The BARD token is Lombard's native governance and utility asset. Lombard addresses the challenge of Bitcoin's passivity by enabling BTC holders to generate yield and engage in various on-chain markets across different blockchains, transforming it from a dormant asset into an active, earning participant while preserving liquidity and usability.

Lombard operates by allowing users to deposit native Bitcoin, which is subsequently staked through integrated protocols. In exchange, users receive LBTC, a liquid, yield-bearing Bitcoin derivative fully backed 1:1 by the deposited native BTC. LBTC empowers users to participate in DeFi for staking, yield generation, and collateral. LBTC differs from BARD in its function: LBTC is the yield-bearing representation of Bitcoin for DeFi engagement, whereas BARD is the native utility and governance token of the Lombard Protocol, vital for securing and governing the entire ecosystem.

The BARD token performs several critical functions. Firstly, it enables Governance, allowing holders to vote on key protocol decisions such as fee structures, product enhancements, and ecosystem grants. Secondly, BARD is crucial for Security, as staking it helps fortify the LBTC cross-chain bridge, the Lombard Ledger, and associated infrastructure, often via technologies like Chainlink CCIP. Lastly, BARD provides Incentives, offering holders benefits like early access to Lombard products, preferred terms, extra features, and staking rewards, thereby encouraging active participation and liquidity provision.

Users can acquire BARD tokens through several channels. Historically, they have been distributed via airdrops to eligible participants. Additionally, BARD tokens are available for spot trading on various leading centralized exchanges, typically in pairs such as BARD/USDT. They may also be accessible through liquidity pools on decentralized exchanges. The project has also been featured in HODLer Airdrop programs by prominent platforms.

Lombard's LBTC offers distinct advantages over traditional wrapped Bitcoin solutions like WBTC. Unlike WBTC, which typically depends on a single custodian and does not generate yield, LBTC is specifically designed to be yield-bearing. It maintains a full 1:1 backing by native Bitcoin and integrates with specialized Bitcoin Staking Protocols, such as Babylon, to enable yield generation. Furthermore, Lombard employs a distributed custody model for enhanced security and provides transparent on-chain proof-of-reserve, contrasting with the often centralized custodial approaches of other wraps.

Users engaging with Lombard or holding BARD should be aware of potential risks. For LBTC, there's a slashing risk if validators fail to perform their duties when staking BTC. A de-peg risk exists where LBTC's market price might deviate from the native Bitcoin it represents. Additionally, unstaking periods for LBTC can expose users to market price volatility. For the BARD token itself, similar to other digital assets, it is subject to significant price volatility, influenced by various factors including its tokenomics, broader market sentiment, and network activity.
