Livepeer is a decentralized video streaming network protocol built on the Ethereum blockchain. It aims to offer a more cost-effective and censorship-resistant method for streaming live and on-demand video. This is achieved by distributing the computing power needed for video transcoding and hosting across its global network, moving away from traditional centralized infrastructure.

Livepeer connects broadcasters with "orchestrators" who perform video transcoding. Broadcasters pay in ETH for services. Orchestrators stake LPT tokens to process jobs and earn LPT and ETH. Delegators, LPT holders, stake with orchestrators to earn rewards. The network uses smart contracts on Ethereum, now primarily leveraging Arbitrum for efficiency and lower fees. This decentralized model ensures video processing is distributed, making it robust and scalable.

Livepeer enables developers to integrate live video into applications, significantly cutting production costs for streaming. Key use cases include video-on-demand payment systems, auto-scaling video services for dynamic needs, and broadcasting live content without censorship. It's also vital for embedding live video into decentralized applications (dApps). Furthermore, Livepeer supports real-time AI video processing capabilities, such as advanced object detection for various applications.

The LPT token is central to the Livepeer platform, serving multiple critical functions. It is used for Staking, where orchestrators stake LPT as a "security deposit" to perform work and delegates stake to earn rewards. Incentivization is another key role, as LPT rewards are distributed to network contributors. For Governance, LPT holders can vote on Livepeer Improvement Proposals and treasury initiatives. Lastly, LPT facilitates Coordination, helping manage the distribution of transcoding tasks across the network effectively.

Staking LPT involves delegating your tokens to an orchestrator. First, acquire LPT tokens and store them in an Ethereum-compatible wallet. Then, navigate to the Livepeer Explorer (explorer.livepeer.org), connect your wallet, preferably on the Arbitrum network for lower fees. Carefully select an orchestrator based on their performance, fee structure, and reliability. Finally, approve and delegate your LPT tokens to your chosen orchestrator through the explorer interface.

Orchestrators are node operators who contribute essential computing resources like CPU, GPU, and bandwidth to transcode video and execute AI tasks. They stake LPT to secure work and earn LPT and ETH fees for their services, playing a vital role in network operations. Delegators are LPT token holders who choose not to operate an orchestrator node themselves. Instead, they support the network by staking their LPT tokens with an existing orchestrator, thereby earning a share of the orchestrator's rewards. This allows broader community participation.
