(LUSD)

LUSD is a stablecoin designed to maintain a value equivalent to the US dollar. It is minted when users deposit ETH as collateral into the Liquity Protocol, which offers interest-free loans. Users can borrow LUSD up to a minimum collateral ratio of 110% of their deposited ETH value. The protocol uses a Stability Pool containing LUSD to help maintain the peg and absorb liquidated debt, with borrowers collectively acting as guarantors of last resort.

LUSD maintains its peg through several mechanisms, including a redemption mechanism, the Stability Pool, redistribution, and recovery mode. If LUSD trades below $1 on secondary markets, arbitrageurs are incentivized to redeem 1 LUSD for $1 worth of ETH, creating buying pressure. The minimum collateral ratio acts as a price ceiling, preventing the token from significantly exceeding $1. Liquity also uses one-time borrowing and withdrawal fees that adjust automatically to discourage excessive borrowing and maintain stability.

LUSD offers interest-free loans, where users pay a one-time borrowing fee instead of ongoing interest. It boasts decentralization and censorship resistance, operating autonomously through smart contracts without governance. Exclusively backed by ETH collateral, it appeals to those prioritizing decentralization. It provides capital efficiency with a low minimum collateral ratio of 110% and allows direct redeemability, enabling users to swap LUSD for its underlying ETH collateral at face value anytime.

LUSD serves multiple purposes, including borrowing against ETH collateral to access liquidity without selling ETH. Users can also provide liquidity to trading pools, participate in the Stability Pool to earn rewards from liquidations and LQTY tokens, or use it as a price-stable asset for hedging against market volatility. Additionally, it enables arbitrage trading to profit from price fluctuations across different markets.

LUSD carries several risks. Liquidation risk exists if deposited ETH collateral value falls below the minimum collateralization ratio. Smart contract risk is inherent, as with all DeFi protocols, due to potential vulnerabilities. De-peg risk means LUSD can deviate from its $1 peg due to market pressures. Increased regulatory scrutiny on stablecoins could impact operations. It faces competition from other stablecoins, requiring constant differentiation. Scalability issues might lead to slower transactions or higher fees if infrastructure is strained by high volumes.

LUSD can be acquired by opening a Trove on the Liquity Protocol and minting it against ETH collateral. Alternatively, it can be purchased on decentralized exchanges (DEXs) like Curve and Uniswap. Users can also obtain LUSD through various crypto wallets and platforms that facilitate cryptocurrency swaps, exchanging other digital assets for LUSD.
