The original Iron Finance project featured an algorithmic stablecoin, IRON, which was partly collateralized by USDC and a volatile token called TITAN. In June 2021, a "bank run" began when large holders started selling TITAN. This created a severe negative feedback loop, causing TITAN's price to drop drastically and IRON to lose its peg from $1. This event led to substantial losses for participants, estimated around $2 billion.
Iron Finance's team denied that the collapse was a "rug pull," instead attributing it to poor tokenomics and a large-scale crypto bank run. However, analysis often suggested the incident stemmed from a critical design flaw in the algorithmic stablecoin mechanism. The stabilizing system failed when TITAN's price experienced a rapid decline, leading to the broader collapse.
The ICE token was introduced as a successor to TITAN ("TITANv2") during Iron Finance's efforts to rebuild in July 2021. Its primary purpose includes governance staking, enabling holders to earn fees from the ecosystem. It is also designed to incentivize liquidity for new stablecoin designs and other products such as IronSwap and IronLend, aiming to foster growth and participation.
