Harmony Horizon Bridged USDC (1USDC) is a version of USDC that was transferred from the Ethereum blockchain to the Harmony network using the Horizon Bridge. Its purpose was to enable users to utilize USDC within the Harmony ecosystem, typically maintaining a 1:1 value mapping when bridged.
On June 23, 2022, the Harmony Horizon Bridge was exploited, resulting in the theft of various crypto assets, including USDC. This hack occurred due to the compromise of private keys securing the bridge. The exploit subsequently caused 1USDC to significantly de-peg from its intended stable value, meaning its worth on the Harmony network became substantially less than a native USDC.
While the Horizon Bridge was originally designed for two-way transfers between Harmony and Ethereum, allowing 1USDC to return to native USDC, the hack severely complicated this process.
