HairDAO functions as a BioDAO, an integral part of the DeSci movement, established as a decentralized pharmaceutical company. Its central mission is to fund and propel early-stage research dedicated to developing treatments for hair loss. The organization specifically highlights that traditional funding bodies, such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), have historically overlooked and underfunded this critical area of medical research, which HairDAO aims to rectify through its community-driven model.

Lastly, token holders are typically eligible for a 25% discount on treatments and software launched through the HairDAO ecosystem, including platforms like Anagen.

Individuals can earn $HAIR tokens by actively contributing to the HairDAO ecosystem through several avenues. Tokens can also be earned by participating in various working groups focused on Research, Awareness, or Strategy. Anagen, launched in January 2025, is HairDAO’s dedicated on-chain telehealth platform. This platform enables users to conduct video consultations with healthcare professionals. A significant aspect of Anagen is its role in providing access to experimental or off-label treatments, such as topical thyroid hormones, which have been subjects of research within the DAO. It serves as a direct channel for the community to potentially access novel treatments resulting from HairDAO’s decentralized research efforts.

Significant debate surrounds HairDAO's research methods, with critics like YouTuber KwRx alleging that its "community-led trials" bypass FDA regulations and involve grey-market chemicals. The project counters these claims by defining its activities as "observational studies" or "biohacking collaboration," rather than formal Phase I-III clinical trials. While HairDAO highlights collaboration with established researchers like Dr. Ralf Paus, the involvement of figures such as "Jumpman," who promotes "group buys" of experimental chemicals, continues to generate discussion regarding regulatory compliance and participant safety.
