Flow is a blockchain-based decentralized ecosystem and platform engineered for scalability, particularly for interactive experiences, decentralized applications (dApps), and blockchain-based games. Its primary purpose is to offer a highly scalable environment and architecture for rapid transactions without congestion. This facilitates the seamless creation and trading of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), dApps, and games. Flow was developed by Dapper Labs, the creators of CryptoKitties, to address scalability challenges encountered on other blockchain platforms.

Flow operates on a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) protocol, employing a distinct "multi-role architecture" to ensure scalability without sharding. This design distributes tasks and data across specialized nodes: Collection Nodes order transactions, Consensus Nodes create new blocks, Execution Nodes finalize transactions and record state changes, and Verifier Nodes validate execution work. This specialized division allows for high transaction throughput. Additionally, Flow utilizes Cadence, a developer-friendly programming language, for smart contract development.

Flow's distinctiveness lies in its multi-role architecture that avoids sharding, allowing all applications to run in the same shared execution state and preserving atomic composability. It is optimized for consumer-scale applications like NFTs and gaming, prioritizing scalability and user experience with low gas fees and high throughput. Flow also offers upgradable smart contracts and is fully EVM equivalent, enabling developers to build with Solidity code used on other established blockchain networks.

The FLOW token is the native cryptocurrency of the Flow network, serving several core functions. It is used to pay for network fees, including transactions, storage, and gas. Holders can stake FLOW to help secure the network, either by running a validator node or delegating tokens, earning staking rewards. Staked FLOW tokens will also eventually grant governance rights for protocol and network upgrade proposals. Furthermore, developers can integrate FLOW as an in-app currency for payments, services, or rewards within their dApps, with plans for its use as collateral for secondary tokens.

This includes reputable centralized cryptocurrency exchanges (CEXs) and certain crypto wallets that facilitate direct purchases using debit/credit cards, bank transfers, or mobile payment options. Prominent examples include NBA Top Shot, a popular digital collectible game, NFL All Day for official National Football League digital collectibles, and UFC Strike. There are also partnerships with major entertainment brands like Disney for official blockchain games, alongside CryptoKitties, the game that inspired Flow's creation. The ecosystem further encompasses NFT marketplaces, DeFi applications, and various other Web3 experiences.
