What is EUSD (OLD) (EUSD)?

eUSD (OLD) refers to the initial version of the stablecoin issued by the Lybra Protocol, a decentralized finance project. This specific token is often labeled as old or V1 following the protocol's migration to a newer version, Lybra V2, which introduced updated smart contracts and expanded features. The project was designed as a decentralized, interest-bearing stablecoin. Its primary mechanism involved over-collateralization, where users would deposit Ethereum (ETH) or Liquid Staking Derivatives, specifically Lido Finance's stETH, to mint eUSD tokens. By using yield-bearing assets as collateral, the protocol could generate income from the underlying staking rewards. This income was then converted into eUSD and distributed back to token holders, allowing users to earn a stable return simply by holding the asset in their wallets. The Lybra Protocol aimed to provide the cryptocurrency ecosystem with a more decentralized alternative to centralized stablecoins. It relied on a combination of liquidations, arbitrage, and high collateral requirements to maintain its intended value relative to the US dollar. Users interacted with the protocol by borrowing eUSD against their deposited assets, effectively gaining liquidity without having to sell their ETH or stETH holdings. The transition to the OLD designation happened when the Lybra Foundation launched its V2 upgrade. This upgrade was intended to improve the protocol's scalability, security, and cross-chain capabilities. During this process, a migration path was established for users to move from the original V1 eUSD to the new version. The original token continues to exist on the blockchain but is no longer the primary focus of the active development team or the main liquidity pools within the updated ecosystem. In summary, eUSD (OLD) represents the legacy stablecoin of the Lybra Finance ecosystem. It was a pioneer in the liquid staking derivative space by creating a stable asset that automatically accrued value for its holders through decentralized staking yields. While it has been superseded by a newer version, it remains an important part of the protocol's history as an early example of interest-bearing decentralized stablecoins. Learn more
