Ethena staking involves locking ENA tokens to receive sENA in return. sENA, or Staked ENA, is a liquid receipt token designed to increase in value over time through a vault-based reward system. It represents the staked ENA within the Ethena protocol.
sENA holders do not need to manually claim rewards. Instead, rewards accumulate directly within the staking contract, causing the inherent value of sENA to increase over time relative to ENA. This mechanism is similar to a widely adopted liquid staking model. While you might initially receive a smaller quantity of sENA than the ENA staked, the continuously growing value of each sENA token ensures that the total value of your sENA will always be equal to or greater than the ENA you initially committed.
Users can unstake their sENA at any time through the Ethena dApp interface by selecting the "Unstake" option and confirming the transaction. However, there is a mandatory seven-day cooldown period before the unstaked ENA can be withdrawn. During this period, the tokens are held within the protocol.
Beyond accruing value from staking rewards, sENA holds significant utility. It functions as a governance token, empowering holders to vote on ENA tokenomics proposals and other specific ENA-related decisions. Furthermore, sENA acts as a liquid receipt token, designed for composability across various decentralized finance (DeFi) applications. While the initial value was 1 sENA = 1 ENA, sENA is designed to slowly increase in value. This occurs as distributions are transferred into the staking smart contract, leveraging its token vault mechanism. Consequently, even if a staker initially receives fewer sENA tokens than ENA staked, the overall value of their sENA is expected to consistently be equal to or greater than the ENA originally staked.
