crvUSD is a stablecoin designed to maintain a value equivalent to one US dollar. Users can mint crvUSD by depositing approved cryptocurrency collateral into the protocol. This process essentially allows individuals to take out a loan in crvUSD against their crypto assets, enabling them to access stable value while retaining exposure to their underlying collateral. The collateral types are determined by governance.

The crvUSD peg is primarily upheld through overcollateralization, meaning the value of deposited collateral exceeds the amount of crvUSD minted. It also utilizes dynamic stabilization mechanisms, including automatically adjusting borrow rates based on supply and demand. Additionally, 'Peg Keepers' play a crucial role by algorithmically minting or burning crvUSD to counter market imbalances, ensuring the stablecoin's value aligns with the dollar.

crvUSD employs an innovative liquidation system called LLAMMA (Lending-Liquidating AMM Algorithm). Instead of an instant, full liquidation at a single price point, LLAMMA gradually converts a user's collateral into crvUSD across a smooth range of prices as the collateral's value drops. This unique method aims to significantly reduce liquidation risk and limit potential losses for borrowers to a small percentage, rather than total loss of their collateral.

With crvUSD, there isn't a single, precise liquidation price as found in traditional systems. Instead, your collateral is deposited across a range of prices within the LLAMMA mechanism. If the price of your collateral falls within this pre-defined range, the gradual conversion of your collateral into crvUSD begins. This design provides a smoother, less abrupt liquidation experience, aiming to mitigate sudden and severe losses.

Initially, Ethereum (ETH) was a primary collateral asset approved for minting crvUSD, with plans for the protocol to support a wider range of crypto assets over time. The introduction and approval of new collateral types are managed through the protocol's decentralized governance. Proposals for new collateral markets must be submitted and subsequently voted on by the DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization) members, ensuring community consensus on accepted assets.

Key risks for crvUSD users include potential smart contract vulnerabilities, which could lead to exploits or loss of funds. Economic exploits, where market manipulation or unforeseen interactions within the protocol could impact stability, are also a concern. Furthermore, the inherent risks associated with all decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols, such as oracle failures or broader market volatility, apply to crvUSD. Users engaging in staking crvUSD should also be aware of the mechanism where their crvUSD balance may decrease while collateral balance increases during liquidation events.
