$CARROT is the on-chain incentive token for the Puffer Finance ecosystem. Introduced in Season 2 to replace legacy off-chain points, it functions as an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum network. By moving rewards on-chain, Puffer provides greater transparency and allows users to utilize their rewards within the decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem—such as through staking or trading on decentralized exchanges—prior to the final conversion into the $PUFFER governance token.
$CARROT and $PUFFER serve different roles within the ecosystem. $PUFFER is the primary governance token used for protocol decision-making. In contrast, $CARROT is an intermediary reward token earned through participation. Typically, at the end of an ecosystem "Season," $CARROT holders can convert their tokens into $PUFFER at a rate determined by the Puffer DAO. This allows the protocol to reward active users while maintaining a structured path to governance participation.
Users can accumulate $CARROT through three main activities. First, by staking ETH to mint and hold pufETH, Puffer’s Liquid Restaking Token. Second, by providing liquidity with pufETH in supported decentralized finance pools. Third, by participating in governance; users who lock their $PUFFER tokens receive vePUFFER, which allows them to vote on the direction of token emissions. These methods incentivize users to contribute to the protocol's liquidity and security.
The "Crunchy Carrot Quest" is Puffer Finance’s gamified incentive initiative. While the first season of the quest utilized an off-chain points system, Season 2 and all subsequent phases reward participants directly with $CARROT tokens. The program is designed to drive engagement by rewarding users for specific on-chain actions that benefit the Puffer ecosystem, effectively transitioning the community from legacy points to a fully on-chain reward structure.
When claiming rewards, users receive mtwCARROT (meta-tokenized wrapped CARROT). This version of the token is subject to a 30-day vesting cliff. Once the 30-day period concludes, the tokens can be "unwrapped" into liquid $CARROT. Note that each new claim typically resets the 30-day timer for the total pending balance. This mechanism is intended to encourage long-term commitment to the protocol and manage the flow of liquid tokens into the market.
$CARROT emissions are distributed bi-weekly and are governed by the community. Holders of vePUFFER (obtained by locking $PUFFER) participate in "gauge voting." This process allows voters to decide which liquidity pools or integration partners receive the highest percentage of new $CARROT emissions. This decentralized approach ensures that rewards are directed toward the most productive areas of the ecosystem as determined by stakeholders.
