Basis Cash is a decentralized finance project that launched as an algorithmic stablecoin protocol on the Ethereum blockchain. It was designed to function as a censorship resistant medium of exchange with a value intended to maintain parity with the United States dollar. The project was introduced as a community driven revival of an earlier protocol called Basis, which had previously shut down because of regulatory challenges. The ecosystem operates through a three token model consisting of Basis Cash, Basis Shares, and Basis Bonds. Basis Cash serves as the primary stablecoin asset. To manage its value without relying on traditional collateral, the protocol uses an automated supply adjustment mechanism. When demand for Basis Cash is high and its value exceeds the intended target, the protocol mints new tokens. These new tokens are distributed to holders of Basis Shares, who act as the stake holders of the system. Conversely, when demand falls and the value of Basis Cash drops below the target level, the protocol issues Basis Bonds. Users can purchase these bonds using Basis Cash, which effectively removes the stablecoins from circulation to reduce the total supply. These bonds can later be redeemed for Basis Cash once the value returns to the target level, providing an incentive for users to help stabilize the system during periods of low demand. The project gained significant attention due to its pseudonymous origins. It was launched by developers using the names Rick Sanchez and DeFi Morty. Years after its debut, investigative reports and former employees revealed that Do Kwon, the founder of the Terra ecosystem, was one of the anonymous figures behind the project. Basis Cash is often cited as a precursor to later algorithmic stablecoin experiments. Despite its innovative design, the protocol struggled to maintain its intended stability over time and is generally regarded as an early experiment in the evolution of decentralized monetary systems.
