The name of the token is a direct reference to the physical appearance of Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong. The project featured an image of a character known as BALD Jesus and promoted a community narrative called BALDism. The project was managed by a pseudonymous developer who operated the social media account BaldBaseBald. The launch was unique because it occurred before the Base network had a functional user interface for its bridge, meaning users had to use specialized developer tools to transfer assets to the network to interact with the token. The history of BALD is defined by a major controversy that occurred shortly after its debut. In late July 2023, the token's developer suddenly removed a massive amount of liquidity from the primary trading pool. This action caused the token's availability and stability to collapse instantly, leading to widespread accusations of a rug pull or an exit scam. While the developer publicly denied these allegations by stating they had only added and removed liquidity rather than selling tokens directly, the event effectively ended the project's momentum. Following the liquidity withdrawal, various blockchain investigators and community members attempted to trace the developer's wallet. On-chain analysis suggested potential links between the BALD deployer and wallets associated with Alameda Research, the trading firm connected to the collapsed FTX exchange. However, these connections remain speculative and have not been officially confirmed.
