ApeCoin (APE) is an ERC-20 governance and utility token that powers the APE ecosystem. Launched in March 2022, it is strongly associated with the popular Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT collection, created by Yuga Labs. The token serves as a foundational element for a decentralized platform designed to support innovation and community-driven development in the Web3 space, encompassing art, gaming, entertainment, and events.

ApeCoin offers diverse utility within its ecosystem. Holders gain voting rights in the ApeCoin DAO, influencing future development through proposals. It serves as the primary medium of exchange in the expanding APE ecosystem, including Yuga Labs' Otherside metaverse. Owning APE can provide access to exclusive events, merchandise, games, and services. Third-party developers are also encouraged to integrate APE into their applications for incentivization. Additionally, a Native Yield mechanism offers passive income opportunities for APE holders.

ApeCoin has a fixed total supply of 1 billion APE tokens, all minted at once at launch. There is no mechanism to mint new tokens or burn existing ones, ensuring a constant supply. The distribution allocated 62% to the ApeCoin DAO community (15% to BAYC/MAYC holders, the rest to the ecosystem fund), 16% to Yuga Labs and charity, 14% to launch contributors, and 8% to the founders of Yuga Labs and BAYC. Allocations for Yuga Labs, contributors, and founders were subject to a vesting schedule.

ApeCoin is governed by the ApeCoin DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization). All APE token holders are members of the DAO and can propose and vote on Ape Improvement Proposals (AIPs). These proposals cover a wide range, from funding requests and technical upgrades to community projects, allowing holders to shape the ecosystem's future. The APE Foundation serves as the legal steward and administrator, executing the decisions made by the DAO and managing the ecosystem fund.

ApeCoin (APE) is available on various centralized and decentralized cryptocurrency exchanges. You can purchase APE using debit/credit cards, bank transfers, or by swapping other cryptocurrencies. LBank, among other major exchanges, supports APE. The typical process involves signing up for an exchange, verifying your identity, depositing funds into your account, and then placing an order to buy APE tokens.

The United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) launched an investigation into Yuga Labs in October 2022 to determine if its BAYC NFTs and ApeCoin were unregistered securities. However, in March 2025, the SEC reportedly closed its investigation, confirming that BAYC NFTs and ApeCoin are not securities. A U.S. federal judge also dismissed an investor lawsuit in October 2025, ruling that neither Yuga Labs' NFTs nor ApeCoin qualify as securities under American law, as they were marketed as digital collectibles with membership perks.
